Rhus aromatica

Crush the foliage between your fingers, and experience the pleasant smell that gives Fragrant Sumac its name. This plant is fast growing, generally pest and disease-free, and drought-tolerant - suitable en masse as a ground cover, an excellent shrub for stabilizing banks and slopes. In the fall, glossy blue-green leaves turn shades of red, orange and purple. During the winter, when food sources are limited, birds may visit the plant to eat the berries, with the Spring Azure and the Red-banded Hairstreak using fragrant sumac as a host plant.
