Balsam Poplar
Populus balsamifera
The Balsam Poplar grows between 20 and 60 feet tall, sometimes even taller, with dark gray, deeply grooved bark. It has a straight trunk and strong, upright branches. Its dark green leaves are glossy on top and silvery or brown beneath. Catkins emerge before the leaves, followed by lightweight cottony seeds dispersed by the wind. This large tree features a narrow, open crown and aromatic, resinous buds that emit a distinctive balsam fragrance.
