Myrica gale

With a sweet fragrance that doubles as an insect repellant, Sweet Gale is a lovely, low-growing shrub with glossy green leaves. Loved by both birds and humans, with a plethora of medicinal uses tied to this plant. Sweet Gale can tolerant a variety of moist soil types and is salt, wind, and deer resistant. This versatile and attractive plant is an excellent choice for wetland restoration projects and can be planted in wet meadows, ponds, or borders of water gardens.

In the fall, woody shrubs support the hibernation of some cavity-nesting native bees and other pollinators.
