The Common Milkweed is the plant that most people associate with the word “milkweed”. This is a tall and conspicuous species that sometimes forms large clones in disturbed sites, and thus can spread in a managed garden.
This is a primary Larval Host plant for the Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus).
Shade Tolerance: Full to part Sun
Moisture: moist to wet
Soils: Loam, Clay, Sand, Muck
Height: 4-5 ft., up to 8 ft.
Bloom Time: June - August
Color: White, pink, mauve
Deer Resistant: Yes
Uses: Rain garden, butterflies
Warning: Poisonous parts include milky sap from leaves, stems. Toxic only in large quantities.
