Blackgum

Nyssa sylvatica

Also known as black tupelo, it is an attractive, variable-shaped, deciduous tree.  It grows to 30-60 ft. or taller, with horizontally spreading branches. Blackgum is a handsome ornamental and shade tree and it is also a honey plant that provides ample nectar for bees. The juicy, bitter fruit is consumed by many birds and mammals although multiple trees may be needed for significant production. This species tolerates drier soils but more commonly found in low-lying sites with high water tables.
It is the longest living non-clonal flowering plant in Eastern North America, capable of obtaining ages of over 650 years.
